MY DECISION
Last December I took a call from Sam Skardon, the Chairman of the Charleston County Democratic Party, asking for help in finding local candidates to run in 2024. We talked at length about what kind of candidate we needed for South Carolina House District 112, a seat held by a two term Republican incumbent with strong wins in the past two elections. As the Chair of East Cooper Democrats, I knew a number of politically active residents and told Sam I’d come up with some names of potential candidates.
A day or two later I received an email from Sam describing the Party’s thinking for local races and was surprised to see my name slated for District 112. The idea of running for office was so off of my radar that I didn’t realize Sam had been recruiting me to run in a race that would be challenging for the Democrats. At that point, with the filing deadline over three months away, I was hoping we would find a candidate who wasn’t named Peter Brennan, but I also had that much time to really consider running for State Representative. As I thought about the issues that were important to me, reproductive rights, gun safety, education, and local development, I realized that running for office was an opportunity to push back on the Republican agenda that was clearly not benefiting our District.
On April 1, one hour before the filing deadline, I submitted my paperwork to run for State Representative. So, I’m running and I’m looking forward to the fight to elect a Democrat to the State House from South Carolina District 112.
